Tell us about yourself as an artist/musician. What do you do?

I mainly work with acoustic guitars and soft, sad folk music. I'm also the queen of layering vocals and open guitar tunings.

What sparked your interest in music?

When I was like fourteen or so, I started really getting into bands like Hole, Garbage, and Veruca Salt, all these really feminine but grungy-sounding bands. Listening to these bands inspired me to start learning how to play the guitar.

Tell us about your time at NOMU so far? Do you have a favorite memory or experience during your time here so far?

Well, this semester has been pretty cool so far. I got to record one of my songs, which was pretty fun. Along the way, I met some cool people in the program. The last time I was part of the program, it was right at the beginning of the pandemic, so nothing much had happened.

When you're writing or playing music, what influences constantly inspire you as a musician/artist (specific artist, film, art piece)?

For sure, Joni Mitchell and Elliot Smith. I think Elliot Smith is probably my biggest influence ever because he made folk cool in the 90s when the mainstream sound was the opposite.

What are your plans or goals in your life now concerning school, music, or just personally, any other pursuits?

I want to get better at recording and becoming a better musician and recording artist. My ultimate goal is to be an intern in a podcast studio and not be paid.

Are you interested in being part of the podcast world, are there any podcasts that you're interested in at the moment?

All of them...except the true crime ones.

Any hobbies outside of music that you're interested in? I know that you said podcasts, but are there any other interests?

I like cooking.

Are there any certain meals that you like cooking up?

I make a mean curry. It's pretty sick.

Is there anything you want to say to people reading this?

Support female artists. They don't get enough attention.

Are there any female artists that you would recommend?

I would like to shout out Locate S,1, a female-fronted math rock band, which those kinds of bands don't get enough attention. Another math rock band that I would recommend is Tricot. They are an all-female band and make math-rock sound cool.

Aporia 16 started getting into music at age 14 when she bought a Hole CD at Goodwill. Seeing women play guitar absolutely changed her life and inspired her to learn. She’s always been a writer, so she started writing songs. During the pandemic, she started getting more into DIY recording, and sad, lo-fi, Indie folk. She plays guitar, but mostly, she’s telling her stories.
