Studio Arts Ensemble | Course Structure
Ground Rules: From the outset, we will establish clear expectations to ensure a positive, respectful, and inclusive environment. Every participant should have the opportunity to contribute, be heard, and feel supported.
Structured Discussions: Discussions will take place in a variety of formats—such as round-robin, small groups, and full-class conversations—to encourage engagement and ensure all voices are represented.
Anonymous Feedback: A confidential feedback system will be in place, allowing students to share their perspectives openly and honestly. This ensures transparency and continuous improvement.
Diversity and Inclusion: We celebrate the unique perspectives, backgrounds, and talents each student brings to the ensemble. Respecting and embracing this diversity fosters creativity and collaboration.
Regular Check-Ins: Routine check-ins will provide space to share progress, concerns, and successes. These conversations help maintain a supportive and connected community.
Conflict Resolution: Conflicts will be addressed constructively, focusing on listening, empathy, and finding common ground. The goal is to strengthen the ensemble through respectful resolution rather than confrontation.
Peer Support: Students are encouraged to form peer support systems. Collaboration and mutual encouragement build resilience and ensure that no one feels isolated.
Faculty Involvement: The instructor will remain actively engaged, approachable, and responsive. Faculty support is centered on mentorship and guiding the ensemble toward collective success.
Studio Arts Ensemble | Guidelines
Genre and Song Selection: Each student may submit two songs for consideration. The ensemble will vote collectively, with final selections depending on sufficient interest and willing performers. The finalized setlist will consist of 9 core songs, with up to 11 additional “wildcard” selections.
We will be selecting at least three songs from the following genres:
Pop: Known for catchy melodies, relatable lyrics, and broad appeal.
Rock/Metal: Driven by guitars, drums, and powerful energy—ranging from classic rock to heavy metal intensity.
Indie/Alternative: Defined by experimental approaches, diverse textures, and creative freedom beyond the mainstream.
Participation and Performance:
Minimum Participation: Each student is required to perform in at least two songs.
Friendly Battles: Battle it out for players/vocalists, but let's wrap it up with a smile by week 4.
Flexibility: Song selections may be adjusted by majority vote or instructor discretion.
Attendance and Professionalism:
Students may not miss more than four sessions without instructor approval. Advance notice (minimum two weeks) is required via Discord (@brady) or email (brady.kerr@norcocollege.edu).
Punctuality: Rehearsals and performances begin promptly. Students are expected to arrive on time and remain for the entire session.
Engagement: Active participation is required, whether performing or providing support. A collaborative and professional rehearsal environment is expected.
Setlist: The setlist is capped at 20 songs, prioritizing quality over quantity. Seasonal songs may be added but will not count toward the 20-song maximum.
Collaboration and Etiquette:
Sound Engineer Collaboration: Communication with the sound engineer should be professional and limited to appropriate times.
Feedback Culture: Feedback is intended as constructive guidance and should be received as an opportunity for growth.
Self-Awareness: Students are encouraged to embrace both their strengths and areas for improvement as part of their artistic development.
Equipment Usage: Rehearsal gear will be the same equipment used for live performance, unless prior substitutions are requested and approved.
Communication Standards: Clear, respectful communication is required both in class and on Discord.
Ensemble Spirit:
Performance Signal: Use the 🤞🏼 gesture (“R” in ASL for “ready”) as a lighthearted indicator of readiness on stage.
Positive Culture: Support your peers, respect the space, and maintain professionalism while fostering a collaborative environment.
