Carson Hale

Tell us about yourself as an artist/musician. What do you do?

I play guitar and am a producer as well. I mostly produce pop punk, punk, California punk, and stuff like that. However, I also dabble in rock production as well.

How long have you been making music, and what sparked your interest in music?

Since I was a little kid, I’ve always liked music. I took it as a hobby in the third grade when I started learning guitar. Later on, I started producing music for the first time a couple of years ago around the same time when I decided to learn how to write my own songs. Since then, I have taken up more instruments like drums and bass.

Tell us about your time at NOMU so far. Do you have a favorite memory or experience during your time here?

The crazy part is that this is my second semester ever at Norco College, but it’s the first one with Brady. As far as memories go, I don’t have one in particular that I could point out, but I’m hoping to make a lot of memories while I’m here. However, my time here has been really good. I enjoy all the people here as they are so creative and talented, and it’s really fun working with everyone.

When you're writing or playing music, what influences constantly inspire you as a musician/artist (specific artist, film, art piece, etc.)? I know that you talked about California punk, pop punk, and other stuff in that vein, so are there any bands/artists that inspire you from those genres?

If I were to go with older music, I love Led Zeppelin. They sparked my musical writing. Blink-182 got me into California punk, which led me to be introduced to sub-bands like Alkaline Trio and Angels & Airwaves. However, I would say my main influence at the moment is Alkaline Trio.

What are your plans or goals in your life now concerning school, music, or just personally, any other pursuits?

Right now, I’m very 100% with my music, and I would love to get an EP out with my band, AWC. We’re trying to record an EP right now. As far as my solo projects, I would like to finish an album and also get an EP out along with that. I think in the long run, I want to set up playing local shows and just see where it goes. I like to take it day by day with music.

Can you talk about your band AWC more?

AWC stands for Among Weak Crowns. We just call it AWC since it was the band name that we came up with when we were sixteen. We started that band at the beginning of my sophomore year in high school. I’m nineteen now, so it’s been a long time. We haven’t released anything officially as we’re trying to catch some wind and go for it. It’s just me and my buddies playing punk songs and having fun.

Are there any hobbies outside of music that you're interested in?

I like playing chess, that’s kind of like my main hobby right now. I’ve been playing chess since 2020, and I'm ok at it. That’s like my main hobby if I’m not doing music.

What got you into chess during the pandemic?

I saw Youtube videos and thought that I should try to learn chess. From then, I kind of fell into the rabbit hole of chess. I thought to myself, “This is great, I'm going to keep doing this!!”

Have you beaten any family members during the pandemic with your chess skills?

No, none of them wanted to learn, so I always would play online. However, I’ve played with some of my friends, and I’ve beaten them a couple of times. I’ve gotten pretty good.

Is there anything you’d like to add, anything you want to tell whoever might be reading this interview, or anything you want people to know about you?

I guess look out for my stuff because I’m going to be working hard. I would appreciate it a lot if you give my stuff a shot. I know that it might not be to your taste, but it’s all good.

I decided to do something interesting for the website where the last artist I interviewed can ask you a question. The last person I interviewed was Dustin Domingo and the question was, "What does it already feel like to look like a superstar?”

It feels weird. Honestly, I’m not good at taking pictures, but it’s an adjustment for sure because I’ve always not taken it seriously since it’s a hard thing to get into. So it’s cool to get some recognition for some of the songs I’ve written. It’s like a hard adjustment though.

Keep in mind; you also get to ask the next artist a question, so what would you like to ask the next artist that I interview?

What’s your biggest irrational fear? (See Jack Martin’s interview for the answer to Carson’s question)
